I've got a motor and transmission from a '77 T-Bird to use in my 52 f1. Was told/thought it was a 351M and C6. Have changed my mind and am going with a '66 289 (with some mods) but would like to use the C6. I've read so many threads on this forum that the C6 bellhousing is not removable ... well, this was is. Any kind of way I could check really quick and see if this is actually a C6 and not a C4? It has a square pan and has a code on the case of "D4AP-7008-AA". Thanks.
C4 has an eleven bolt pan and can be identified also by oval pads on both the left and right side of the case. The C6 has on piece cast with prominent ribs on top of the convertor housing. I don't think that 77 T-Birds had 351m, just 351w.
Not 100% sure about all years, but I thought the c6's had a pan that had an "s" curve in it. Mine does, and I assumed they all did, but I may be wrong.....Kind-of looks like this (sorry for the el-cheapo graphic, ignore the periods, heh):

Thanks guys-this pan has 11 bolts, is more or less square, has no oval pads; found a tag on the passenger side with "8614". Rhodie-your drawing is similar to a sketch I saw for C6 identification and that's what made me start investigating. Wonder if it could be an FMX (I think) some people here call it the "baby-6"?
FMX was used behind the 351C four barrel and held up ok. The 351C had loads of power and torque. the FMX has 14 pan bolts according to my interchange book.
My first thought was FMX becuase we have had several of those 77-79 birds and it was a popular trans with them. I do believe you could get the 351W and 351M with all 3 of those years as well.
A properly prepared FMX will stand with the best C4 or C6.
never seen one take much abuse stock. most shops won't even touch rebuilding them because there is no need and the parts are hard to get . all the aftermarket is in the c-4 and c-6.
