I don't know why tachs aren't STANDARD equipment, being as my swap-in has helped with diagnosis!
As for why I went factory, well, my swap looks factory as I swapped the center speedo section to keep the proper odo reading and less than $50 got my cluster for me. Cheaper than a decent tach that isn't 5" and blocking my view! The Haynes manual (which you should buy anyway) has the steps for yanking the dash trim and swapping the odo units in chapter 12.
PS I remember answering the same question before I went offshore for a month ago....PLEASE read up on BOTH posts you left!
