are programmers worth the $?

Are they worth the money and which one is the best? I've heard that some will help with mpg but I've also heard that the manufactures test are the only ones that see that. What are your thoughts/experiences?
Thanks

if you plan on doing gears and tires on a 99 and newer then theyre good for changing speedo. if you have an auto you can change tranny shift points and firmness. they read codes but you can get that done at autozone for nothing. i havent had my superchips on the performance tune yet to tell wether or not it helps my mileage.

They do make a difference, but at the expense of using premium gas. Inmost cases the higher gas is evened out by the improvement in fuel economy.

Toss in the ability to read codes, adjust tire and gears ratios (on certain trucks), adjust spark advance, log and view realtime data, adjust tranny firmness, etc, makes a tuner a very valuable tool.

I can't speak for one in a truck, however it turned my 13 second car into a 12 second car. I was running 13.0's on motor, and wanted to see the 12's without using my nitrous. I was able to firm the shifts, adjust my fan control with a 160* stat, and add mph to my shifts so my A4 wasn't shifting just before the line. I gained .15 seconds. Started running consistant 12.8's after that for about 300 bucks!

I would assume it would also have benefits in a truck.

theyre very valuable. it was the first thing i bought when i got my 01 because i knew i was doing wheels tires and gears. jsut keep in mind though stang302 that they do nothing for speedo for trucks b4 99.

Hypertech makes a dual fuel programmer. I watched a do it yourself show on Speed TV and they made 28 extra HP on a Chevy pickup using 87 octane. They also could program a more aggressive program which required 93 octane. I'm gonna buy the Hypertech with the dual fuel capability.
Plus, it reads codes! Now if it could only cook....
