Thumbs up Air Horns

I want to add an air horn(s) to my truck. I looked into the Hella Air horns they have in Moss motors, but ive read some poor reviews on them. People saying that they sound kinda like clown horns, kinda silly. I want something to sound mean, meaty, and command attention. Somthing Loud kinda like a Semi-Truck horn.

Any suggestions. Anyone else looking into this?
I think this would be one heck of a cool modification.

What do you guys think?

Personally, I would prefer a PA system. That way the offending driver/pedestrian can hear what's being said in the cab just in case they don't understand sign language.

My wife is always telling me "You know they can't hear you", well when I return home they will hear me!

This has been discussed recently on the Excursion forum, go to www.hadley-products.com

Not inexpensive, but probably what you are looking for.

One thing to remember with real air horns (the ones that sound like semi's or trains anyway) is that you will need to mount and lug around an air tank as the motors can't power enough air through the horn to get volume without it. The ones used on fire engines were the ones I wanted to get but they are also very expensive. They are made by a company called Grover. You can search on eBay and see a ton of them.

Good luck!

Awhile back I sold a boat. The old air horns had quit and were badly pitted, so I split the cost (maybe $200.00 for dual chrome trumpets with compressor-no tank necessary) of a new set with the buyer. We found them at West Marine products. Do a search on their web site for horns, and you'll have some choices. Good luck

I want to hook it up with my stock horn wires. I dont want to mount a switch for the horn. I think I can just wire the compressor to my stock wires, then run the hoses to the horns? Would this be how it worked? Seems right in my head.

Yep, thats basically how it would work. There should be no reason you would need a separate switch to operate that unit. You just might need to be crafty in where you mount the air tank and the trumpet as some of those horns can get as long as 25" or so. I am really thinking of doing this too as I used to have an old "Ahoooga" horn on my '98 contour and it was a blast to get people to look. I was going to do it again, but a truck should have some serious noise for a horn.

If you buy a kit, I'd say get the real deal with the tank and long trumpet as opposed to the small $30 kits with the high pitch!

I was thinking about a small air comressor to power two horns. I was thinking behind the bumper mount or in the same spot as the original horn. I guess the best way would be to point it horizontal, pointing down will get stuff thrown up into them, and pointing up will get things stuck down in them.

you dont need a air tank as stated before, on our 2500 gmc the origanal horn went our so i got 2 horns off of a wrecked semi and bout a small air pump and you new if you were in our way and so did everyone in a 5 block radius. on ours, the pump was rated for more than the fuse for the horn, so i set up a relay comming off the battery
