Lucas any good?

I have a 99 F-250 w/ a V-10. When the truck is cold it has a slight knock or tick. I have been told its piston slap and have been recomended to use Lucas in the oil that it will help eliminate my problem. Any ideas on Lucas or how to help stop the dreaded noise when cold. I love my truck its sweet but this bothers me and if I can do something to help her out and eliminate the noise then lets hear it......

Thanks, Bill

What kind of oil and filter are you using now? Plus, how many miles are on the engine?

It has Pennzoil 5W30 and a Pennzoil oil filter on it. It came that way from the dealership i've only owned it for 3 weeks now. I always use a Motorcraft filter and Valvoline oil in my vehicles. What do you guys recommend for it?

Get the Pennz stuff out and go with a Motorcraft filter and your Valvoline. I only use Motorcraft filters and Castrol oil myself, Valvoline is good also. I would not use the Lucas. There are several threads about v10 cold knock/piston slap, the right filter helps this.

I have used Lucas in my 63 "427" Galaxie on a regular basis. It reduces friction and I know it works. I would not use it in newer Mod (4.6, 5.4 or 6.8) motor because these motors are built much tighter. I would try the correct Motorcraft filter and 5w20 oil from the manual.

My brother-in-law used the Lucas stuff in his '95 E150 I6-300 and an '87 E350 351W

Both of them had oil pressure drops within a few weeks of adding the Lucas stuff - the I6 ate it's bearings, the 351W had such high mileage that it survived the drop in pressure but barely. Cruising for a while, come to a stop, KNOCKETY-KNOCK-KNOCK like the bypass in the oil pump stuck open.

Coincidence? Maybe...

There is a website named bobistheoilguy.com or something like that. he did some testing on lucas and found it to allow air in the oil mix and cause foaming which would in turn reduce oil lubricity. Check it out. I also am friends with a chemist who used to sell lucas at his 76 oil distributorship. He then came up with his own molecular attraction metal treatment. But he said that one time they set some lucas outside for a customer to pick up on a sat afternoon and in the heat and direct sunlight, it seperated or turned color or something. He doesn't recommend it or sell it anymore.
