low profile tool box in a short bed
Anyone have a solution for a low profile tool box that rests on the bed rails of a short bed (so boards can still be slid under it) that DOESN'T COVER UP the stake holes near the cab? The short bed only has the four stake holes at the corners, and I don't want to lose the tie-down rings I have installed in the front ones. Most of the rail mounted boxes I have seen have the lid as wide as the rail mounts, which covers the entire stake holes. If the lid was only as wide as the inside bed dimension, then the rail mount could be "notched" out around the stake hole, without compromising the strength I would think. Am I making sense?
I thought I saw a box that had the lid "slide sideways" instead of hinge up, and met my mounting requirements, but I really am looking for a hinged lid, as there isn't always room next to the truck so slide the lid over to open all the way.

I recommended this for someone the other day. Check out www.tracrac.com . They have aluminum rails that fit on top of the truck rails. They just bolt into the stake pockets (NO DRILLING) . Then a standard over the rail toolbox mounts on slides that go into the rack track. You can also add tie downs that will slide into any position along the rails. All quickly removable. No drill installation for any of this. Makes for quick toolbox removal if you need to also. Just make sure the toolbox will slide past the bump outs near the tailgate. Hard to describe what they are. Hmmm more like hips I guess. They can prevent the toolbox from coming all the way out.
Check out the accessories available also. Cool system.
Trac Rac can be found at any home depot I think. Then you can have family members buy you other accessories for holidays/birthday. Add to it as you go! I have one and love it.
