i have a 86 f-250 with a 6.9 in need of a rebuild it burns over 3 quarts of oil a week anyway i normally rebuild my own engines but this is my first diesel and i dont have the time to rebuild it so i checked with a local machine shop about the cost and my jaw hit yhe ground when he told me 3500.oo i can buy a crate motor for 2200 from a ford authorized rebuilder i think 12-1500 should get the job done anybody had there engine rebuilt ? how much did it cost?

 

 

i rebuilt a 85 6.9 last year myself, it wasnt as bad as i thought
all parts and machining were less than $800. i found that parts were cheaper from navistar than ford by a lot. the only thing is that a lot of engine rebuilders that i talked to and know charge more because it is diesel not because it more difficult. thats why i done my own. i have put over 15,000 miles on the engine since i rebuilt it, and havent experienced any problems.

 

I would buy another motor only as a last resort. If you can get the machining done fairly fast, the project should not take more than a week or so. It is very simple, I think it is easier than a gasser because of the timing and the lack of elecrical parts.
