An aquantance of mine told me about a truck his friend has. He said it is a 1958 Ford with a four foot long box. His friend bought it from the original owner about fifteen years ago and said there were only nine made. Have any of you guys heard of a truck like this? I am going to try to get to the truck and take some pictures and post them. I was told the truck is in rough shape and has been under a tarp since the current owner has owned it.

I have heard of and seen some of these supposed rare trucks.
My first guess would be that it was a standard Ford 58 that had an aftermarket (57-58 era) bed on it.

One of the finest examples of this that I have seen was a Nebraska truck that had a 4 foot vetenarian box on it (also offered in 6 and 8 foot boxes). I have also seen other 58 Fords that were converted by local companies for example I have seen some pickups that were converted for airport use.

As far as production numbers (from my research and from what is documented), the really low number productions are really factory Fords modified by dealers or local shops. This, for me at least, does not take away from the interest, or value of the vehicle, I would venture to say that it adds to it.

If you caould find out some more info about the bed, or the size of the truck, that would be interesting.

Take a few pics if you can! I know I've seen aftermarket crewcabs with the short bed. I'm going to a friends house tomorrow who has a 1957 hildy's blue book(aftermarket parts) and I'll see if I can post some info. -4speed

Bob,
It sure does sound interesting!
Do you know if it is a flareside, or a styleside bed?

The '58 F-350 I traded to Father for his '58 M-100, has a 9' bed on it.

I found a "'60 Ford Truck Parts & Accessories Catalog" & is it ever full of everything ones heart could desire for ones truck. Not only that but it has ALL the parts numbers to now locate them on sites that ask for them.
Now all I need to do is find one for my '58 M-100 & then I'll be all set when I need to find parts numbers.

I'll tell ya, a 9' bed comes in real handy at times.

As far as rare I seriously doubt if it is a factory item. Ford sold thousands of cab and chassis packages to an untold number of companies. Even went to dealers who farmed them out to a local company to build up.
