I just talked to a friend of mine who has a 1999 POWERSTROKE 1 Ton 4WD with oversized tires 35x12.5x16.5. He has installed a programmer 100hp. Magnaflow full exhaust system(turbo back) factory replacement K&N air filter. The truck has 100,000 miles.Today his transmission went out,by his description the front pump went out.He talked to a well known trans. repair shop in my area(Houston,Texas). The owner of the shop told him that the programmer caused his trans. to fail, the reason was that under full throttle no fluid is being pumped thru the trans. This is the first time I have heared of this type of problem with these trucks. The trans. shop owner said that any Ford SD that is either chipped or has a programmer installed will suffer the problem with the trans.I was wanting to know if anybody has heard of this problem before with auto trans in these trucks.thanks!
Well the tranny is definately known for problems. However, installing a chip or programmer alone is not going to kill the trans anyway, it is already dying by that point, the additional power just pushes it over the edge quicker. I don't agree with him saying that under full throttle there is no fluid being pumped through the transmission. Me personally, I would go to another shop. Simply based on the inaccurate assumptions made about chips and tuners.
But yes, the TC is probably gone along with the rest of the clutches and a full rebuild is going to be in order. BTS is a big name around here, you might give brian a call, he will dispell any myths you have about the tranny.
