Just bought a '92 Ranger with 4.0 ohv, auto, 2wd, 110k mis. Doing a little tune up, new filters, plugs, wires. I put in standard motorcraft plugs, awsf-42c, gapped at .054, and 8mm Bosch wires. Started it afterward and it runs like crap. I think it's missing on a few cylinders and the exhaust smells like unburned gas. I wondered if I had rewired the plugs in the wrong order. Can someone verify? I read on another board that the Chilton manual has it wrong. Thanks for helping a newbie to Rangers and Ford-Truck Enthusiasts!

crackerjack, - looks like you have it right. Right bank 123, left bank (drivers side) 456. Firing order 142536.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Also you should always do one plug/wire at a time to avoid this issue.

I tried switching the wires between cylinder 5 & 6, and it wouldn't even start. Guess it must be another problem!

Sorry about that, my memory must be slipping, just checked mine and your right. I would pull one wire at a time until you find the cylinder thats not firing and then swap the wire to another cylinder and see if the miss fire follows the wire. You will need to use something insulated. If it follows then bad wire, if it stays do the same with swapping plugs. Did you use dielectric grease?

 

I've got the same problem on my '97 Explorer with the 4.0 OHV, except the problem happened after I washed the motor. Man gaskets for the 4.0 are expensive.

I would seriously consider purchasing a Haynes manual. Less than $20 and includes all specifications for your ranger. I purchased one about 7 years ago and use it every time I do maintenance or repairs, it has never let me down. You can get one, specific to you truck, at Autozone. Hope that helps!
