For those who are interested: I asked my dealer's service department to look into the "clunk" I occasionaly feel in the front end of the truck just after starting the ignition.

They looked at it and told me that it was normal for the truck. They said it was the A/C compressor engaging.

Now that it is cooling down here in Phoenix I'll have to see if it still "clunks" without the A/C being on.

It's an air flapper/diverter door inside the heating/cooling ducts. It's vacumm operated. The clunk is the door closing as soon as the vac pump starts working when you start it.

I experience the same thing in my Excursion when it sits for a few days. As soon as I start the engine there's the clunk, or more like a whoompf/clunk in my case, and then it's fine.

I have the same problem on my 2000, V-10 crew cab, it sounds like something is breaking under there! Does anyone know if this will have a long term wear effect that will later cause other problems( like after the warranty expires and I have to pay)The dealership says that they have no current fix, suggested I call Ford, Ford says call the dealer, no one really seems to care. How can someone complain to the higher level people at Ford? They seem to insulate themselves very nicely against any problem like this?

Search the here on this forum !
this has been discussed alot !
There are 2 clunks that happen after your truck sits for awhile ,let me say that again 1 clunk happens all the time its the airbag activation
readyness,to hear it just turn your key to the on pos ,not run!(don't start the truck)the other one is the vacum actuated air diverter in the ac/heat system.try leaving your ac/heat switch in off when overnight
then start the truck up in the am.there will be no sound, except for the other one above.

I understand that this may have been discussed before and I am sorry if this is redundant.

Any idea how to get Ford to fix this and how to make sure that there is not excessive wear caused by this, specifically when it is out of warranty?

Also any idea how to escalate this at Ford. The dealer said call Ford. I called Ford and got lip service from someone and they said that they are the final word ( they could barely speak english so they did not really give me a positive Customer Service attitude)and that I need to call the dealer. ( I told them the dealer said call Ford, they did not care)

This is not the caring attitude I get when I see William Ford on TV telling me that Ford is a great service company!

I would appreciate anyone's additional input.

Jeff !
did I miss something ?
These are the normal sounds that the truck make!
the airbag activation is normal! it coicides with the airbag indicator
in the dash.
the other sound is when you the operator leave the ac/heat sw in one of the on positions .

Is there another sound ? we have had a possible abs module or solenoid sound come up here before ,but it was never confirmed ,i think.

I have dealt ,I think with that same person at Ford ,hardley speaks english ,what a joke it is ,believe me I understand.
