Fuel pump: Mechanical vs Electric (underbed tank)

Hi Folks:

I was wondering for those of you that moved your tanks back, was the stock fuel pump able to pull fuel reliably? Assuming your lines were primed (dry seems asking a lot), could it keep it? For the folks that went electric, any does/don't I should be aware of?

Thanks,

John

If elect I would put inertia switch at the top of the list

I'm looking for the same lessons learned John. I'm going to use an electric pump when I get to that end of the truck but always looking for tips to improve. I don't mean to hijack your thread but along those lines I would also be curious of a recommended fuel pressure and flow rate for a 215 six cylinder.

carb I would run a mechanical pump, tried and true reliable. Fuel injection I use an in tank pump. Again tried and true reliable OEM designs.

EFI electric fuel pump

I have electric pump mounted on frame rail behind cab; will be changing to intank at some point due to noise of pump, either from cavitation or heating. Also have inertia switch in line with pump.

With the tank all the way in the back, and today's gas, I'd go electric, mounted back near the tank. Many threads in the past on these.

For stock 48-52 engines, a good pump is the Airtex E8016S (12v), they make a 6v model too. This is a low pressure pump, tops out at 4 psi, you may want a regulator to go with it. The Holley 12-804 is a really good unit.

I've had no problem with the stock pump but I did install a new one.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but have you driven yours in hot weather yet, for extended periods? Flat V8's are the worst with their pumps up on top of the engine, but any fuel system that has 10+ ft of line exposed to road and exhaust heat on the suction side is going to struggle to get gas.

My truck will probably never get your kind of heat here in Michigan Ross. But certainly a good thought if I drive down there on a road trip
