I have a '86 f-250,460 it HAD 2 tanks now just a rear tank, they have ran gas lines to the carb, but I cannot get it to fire I think the in tank pump is'nt working,"Could I" use a external electric pump? could I leave the old pump in the tank, should the elec.pump be closer to the tank or the engine.thanks,Rick.
I believe the answer is yes you can use an aftermarket inline fuel pump...BUT...you should not due to safety concerns. The electric pumps are wired to an intertia switch that shuts off the fuel in the case of an accident. With electric aftermarket pumps, this safety measure is not there and if there is an accident, the electric pump will pump and pump and pump...This a a major safety no no (although I have done it). It doesn't really matter where one of these pumps go in the line, just keep it away from heat (exhaust, etc) and away from possible road debri.
Again, from a safety concern standpoint, not recomended, but from a possibility standpoint is will work. I have found though that most aftermarket in line pumps do not hold up well.
Just drop the tank and fix it. I am going through this right now too. I am sucking it up and doing it right.
