I don't have a definitive answer of how to tell for sure but the VAST majority of V-10 EXs did NOT have EGR. Even the Cali spec ones like my '05 don't have the EGR system.

The Ford ETIS system should tell you if it has EGR or not.

It says it meets 49 state emission requirements. Does that mean EGR?

Your wife will not care about the power difference. The big problem with the non-PI head V10 ('97-99) was that it would run out of torque early in the higher RPMs. If you were towing with it, you would find that there was a dead-spot in terms of a certain speed where you couldn't keep pulling up a long hill and it would eventually wind up downshifting into 2nd, speeding up a little, shifting into 3rd, and then running out of steam again, and repeat.

For the record, ALL '97-99 V10s are 2-valve, non-PI head/intake. 2000-2004 F-series, and 2000-2005 Excursion are all 2-valve PI-head. E-series V10 from 2000-up are 2-valve PI-head. 2005-up F-series are 3-valve.

Caveat: I've read that you can put a PI intake on a non-PI head, but that was for the 4.6L - while the V10 has the same port shape as the 4.6L and 5.4L (PI to PI, or non-PI to non-PI) I have no idea if the PI intake will work on a non-PI V10 or if it will help or hinder it in any way.

Good luck with your project, and keep us in the loop
What was the small differences between 2001-2002? Most motors i've looked at say 2000-2001 or 2002-2004 is there really any differences?

The only issue I know of is the later engine got a few more threads in the spark plug holes to help with the plug blow out problem.

The only gas super duties I have ever seen with an egr are the 99's never seen a excursion with it either maybe because there are no 99 excursions also only looked at a few gas excursions over the years so small sample size my 04 is also an California emissions truck no egr. Maybe we need to start a thread and everyone can post the year of there truck and post a pic of the sticker under the hood that way there's no guessing of whether it has egr or not.
In 02 they also switched for the gem module to the vehicle security module I think its called though still no pats system except excursion till 08 and the switch to the digital odometer also happened in 02 not sure what if anything that changes motor or sensor wise though like ford merc said the only actual difference on the motor I know of is the additional threads in the head there have been some guys on here that have said their 03 v10 still only had 4 threads in the so if that's true that could mean the additional threads didn't show up till job 2 of the 03 model year but I have no way of know that for sure

Thank you for that info that helps alot. I've got my sight set on a 2002 motor with 153K miles. Only problem is its 10 hours away one way. Keep hoping for one to pop up closer.

49-state is probably NOT EGR. California, yes.

So you have a spare V10? What are you going to do with the 99 V10? Where are you located?
