Identifying PI heads

I bought my 99' 250 with approx 130K on it. From what I can tell, the trans has been removed and other alterations have been made prior to my ownership. The previous owner was a Captian in the AF and seemed to take really good care of it.

I work at a large dealer and have looked under the hoods of several 01-04 V10s and the ports on the intake manifold look exactly the same as mine. When I was building mustangs, the improved heads had a more retagonal port than non-pi heads.

My truck runs really well for a less-than desireable 99' V10. I was wondering if the engine or heads could have possibly been already replaced.

Any there any numbers or markings to look for?

TIA
Marcus

If you look up that the head from between the fender and the tire you should see the PI casting mark by the front exhaust port if it is a PI..I was looking on the pass. side of motor..

The PI heads for the V10 aren't the same as the PI heads for the 4.6/5.4 - I don't think the intake port shape changed at all like the V8's...

The trick is, low-RPM flow... The PI heads for the 4.6/5.4 DO loose some low-end according to those who've done the conversion.

I figure Ford left the V10's ports the same shape/size to keep the low-end torque.

Ahh, that makes sense. Thanks for the feedback.

We used to port/flow heads and it was all about low lift port velocity on lower RPM street motors.

The heads do change, 97-99 are none-PI and are the same as the 4.6 and 5.4.

The 00-04 are PI and are also the same as the 4.6 and 5.4 PI

(I believe theres a split year between the NPI&PI)

The intake manifold is also different.
