2008 f350 hesitates going in reverse

Hi all. A gentleman on rv.net referred my to this site. I have couple problems and I'll post separately.
It's a 2008 f350 dually with v10. Has 170000 miles and I've had it since May. I went from a class a motor home to a fifthwheel and this truck really was the best truck for the money. Rust free for Ohio was a plus.
During a trip to Michigan with fifth wheel I put in reverse it took about 5 seconds to engage in reverse. Then it happened almost anytime I had driven truck for a while or pulled camper. Place selector in r and wait a little bit. Took to local tranny shop and they suggested replace filter, flush, inspection, and using a cleaner. They said give a few weeks if didn't work bring back and they will tear into it. Well fast forward a month I've had truck in shop for random misfire po300, fuel filter, oil change, front drivers bearing, I put a belt on it , replaced rotted ebrake backer plates and well I just don't feel like taking to shop right now lol. I'll wait a few seconds for all I drive it. Anyways I've talked to a couple other places and they both said maybe best for rebuilt tranny. I'd rather just fix problem but if gonna drop tranny maybe it should be re done. Also if it's gonna be redone maybe a bulletproof tranny for towing is in order. Any thoughts? Thanks all. Oh and another mechanic said solenoids... So there's that.

Is your overdrive OD light blinking ?

Did you try to get transmission error codes from your PCM ? This info will help you.

Not all code readers read tranny codes , check it out .
Good luck

No blinking lights and transmission shop found no codes.

It's an 08 so there's no od off on selector it's just tow/haul. Which usually works .... But sometimes takes a couple pushes of button to engage tow haul.

Sorry I didn't put some vital info. The transmission shop didn't find anything alarming in the pan when they did the service. They put on there computer and they test drive it. They recreated delay before flush and didn't recreate problem after flush. However it still does it.

Mark K addressed this reverse delay a while back. Try searching Mark Kovalsky reverse delay.
A 5R110W shouldn't take more than 2-3 seconds at most to engage. Have the pressures read. Low line PSI indicates trouble. Though youd think if it was that low it would throw a low PIS code? Plus you dont know how well cared for this trans was. It could simply be ready for a rebuild if it wasnt services from new until very recently. Trans fluid and filters should be changed at or before the recommended intervals. I like every 35-45K.

Thanks I'll do the search and see what I get. It spent its life as a company truck. When I bought it I read through car fax service records and now I can't find them. I should just re run the car fax. Seemed to be well maintained but I have no idea of tranny service.

Ok so mark k on one thread said he suspected warn reverse clutch seals on an excursion. The op put Lucas in tranny and resolved issue. I could certainly try that.

Usually this is caused by a sticking SSPC-E solenoid. Sometimes new fluid will fix it, but not for some time after the fluid change. It takes time. Sometimes it won't fix it and the solenoid needs to be replaced.

I wouldn't do that. Was that Excursion the same trans as yours? I doubt it.

Thanks mark for replying. Yea mines an 08 f350 with v10 and 5r110 I think. I believe the excursion as older. So Lucas not good idea? If it takes time that's not really a problem. The delay is just a nuisance.

Anywhere I can read about replacing solenoids?

I don't think additives are a good idea. The older Excursion had a different trans, any fix for that trans is on parts that don't exist in your trans.

Get an exploded view of the valve body to ID the E solenoid . Its easy to change a solenoid. You will need an inch/pound torque wrench. As for the solenoid look for a TransStar distributor or go to stealership to procure the part. Be sure you get FoMoCo parts...nothing offshore belongs in an American truck...ever.
No one in the automotive industry will be in favor of snake oils in a trans. Anything put into a trans other then proper fluid will eventually cause more trouble or simply be a waste of your money. Its either a healthy trans or its not. No amount of snake oil can repair worn frictions/steels/solenoids/seals/pump etc...Its time for a rebuild.
Our friend Mark may have the proper exploded view of the valve body identifying the 6 solenoids hanging off the valve body?
FYI the pan gasket is reusable if your gentle. Put a new filter in there if needed.
