Dana 44 question.

Found a d44 out of a 76 highboy. Everything looks right except for the pinion yoke and I've never seen the casting #d44 6EF. The yoke is really small. I have another axle with a bent tube but it has a bigger yoke and casting D44 6f. Is there a difference? I'm assuming I can just swap yokes? Also, there is a large "E" cast into the top of the pumpkin

This is a 76 open knuckle with disc how can it be a 74-75? It has warn lockouts and you can lock it in. They work. I'm confused.

You said it's a Dana 44-6EF and the info I posted is for the only one I could find.

Numbers, the stamped number on the axle tube is 603763-1. According to this number on the chart it should be a D44HDF housing casting. Also, per this number it's a D6TA. It does state "no" on free running hubs though. Does that mean it came out as full time 4x4 front diff? Could it have been changed?

According to this number on the chart it should be a Dana 44-6HDF w/a 3,500 lbs. capacity front driving axle.

Also, per this number it's Ford: D6TA-BD It does state "no" on free running hubs though. Does that mean it came out as full time 4x4 front diff? Could it have been changed?
D6TA-BD - Dana: 603763-1 (44-6HDF) 4.09-1 without free running hubs or Limited Slip: 1976 F250 Regular Cab 4WD with A/T before serial number B50,001.

The Warn hubs were added by a previous owner.

Yeah I know the warns were added later. You think it was from an automatic truck? The truck it came from was molested. It had a mated 205/435. Truck is titled as a 1976 but had a lot of different year parts.

The front driving axle parts list for D6TA-BD/603763-1 is 30.5H

Look towards the right in this pic for parts list 30.5H and you can see its application.

Thanks! So we're the non free running hubs a full time 4wd? Was there anything different internally or could you just swap in a set of lockouts and convert it to free running?

I haven't a clue, I know less about 4WD than the WPD knew about the 'dog catcher.'

I can look up the parts, but that's about it.

The axles were the same internally. They just had drive flanges on the ends of the axle instead of lock out hubs. I've had 2 original full time 4 wheel drive Highboys, one had the drive flanges. The other had been converted to part time 4 wheel drive and had Warn lockouts that replaced the drive flanges.

Here's the flanges. Once bolted on they have a dust cover that taps over the end just like a trailer hub. Here's the outside view.
