Horn brush woes???

Good day all,

I just purchased a new horn brush from C&G ford parts for my 66 f100.

If I ground out the the blue/yellow wire at the bottom of the tube that the brush fits into, inside the turn signal housing, horn works.

When I install the brush and press it down with a grounded lead, the brush cap sparks and smokes and no horn.

Can these after market brushes be faulty? Inner copper wire looks good.

The horn brush fits into an insulator that is hand pressed into a hole on the outside of the steering wheel, visible once the horn button or horn ring is removed.

When C2OZ-13A821-A is purchased from Carpenter, C&G, NPD and etc., you only get the brush.

But, if you need the insulator, you have to buy a genuine Ford NOS C2OZ-13A821-A .. Horn Brush & Insulator Kit which is obsolete.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 79 = 800-543-4959.

Make sure before buying that both the insulator & the brush are in the box.

Since installing an after market wheel, only suggestion I can offer is clean all contact surfaces during reassembly!

Ah, gotcha Number Dummy, thanks.

I am running an after market steering wheel with the Grant hub and horn assembly.

At this point I plan to make my own contact brush, got a few ideas up my sleeve

Will report back.

Thanks again.

I think any of us could modify-adapt a better brush from a dead power tool. I was stunned by the crappy DC parts I bought recently.

Horn works great now.

Took some solid 1/8" diameter copper.
Then used a spring from a standard ball point pen.

Had to mount and pull the steering wheel a few times and just kept trimming the solid copper until it bottomed out on the hub.

Rounded the ends of the copper nice and smooth.

Probably easier to just find the correct part as Number Dummy gave.

Only took a hour or so.

I need some quick help from you guys on this subject:

I've reinstalled brand new everything in my 64 - new turn signal switch, new contact brush inside the plastic sleeve, new steering wheel, new three spoke chrome horn assembly... but I'm having trouble figuring out how the horn actually contacts. There's a hole in the steering wheel where I believe another contact should go, but when I take the contact out of the plastic signal switch and attempt to make it fit in the steering wheel its the wrong size.

Is this what you're trying to explain in this thread? How to make one fit in the steering wheel as well?

Did your truck originally come with the horn ring, or did it come with a horn button?

1961/66 F100/250 2WD - 1966 F100 4WD - 1967/70 F100/350 use the same 17" 3 spoke steering wheel, horn brush & insulator and chrome horn ring.

These same parts were also used on 1960/63 Falcon.

What was the application for the T/S switch you bought? Where did you buy all these parts?

Note: This pic is for 1965/72, but the pictured horn brush (13A821) and insulator (13A822) are the same as 1964.

The horn brush and insulator fit into a hole on the outside of the steering wheel.

Did the horn ring come complete with all the parts including the nylon retainer?

The Horn ring/button was missing when I got the truck, no idea.

I ordered everything through LMC except the TS switch, which was some random online site, but looks and works the same as the old one that came out of it.

The TS switch has its own horn contact hole (here's a quick google) but so does the steering wheel. The horn makes noise when I have everything apart and arc the switch contact to the steering shaft, just won't work because I'm missing something completing the circuit from the horn ring when it presses down.

LMC's catalog is rife with errors and omissions, they sell the cheapest made in China CRAP parts.

The coil spring that fits between the horn ring and the steering wheel is specific to the horn ring only.

The horn button uses a different spring. Which one did you buy?

1963/64 F100/250 2WD's use a unique T/S switch (C3TZ-13341-B). It's obsolete, not reproduced, only a couple are available NOS

Someone, I don't recall who, is selling the 1963/64 Fairlane & 1965 Mustang T/S switch (C3OZ-13341-B with an generator) as a substitute for this truck switch. Will it work?

See post #2 for a source for the obsolete C2OZ-13A821-A .. Horn Brush & Insulator Kit.

Closer to home: WOLFE FORD in Lidgerwood ND has 7 = 701-538-7337.

Make sure that both the insulator and the horn brush are in the box.
