Hey if I was to switch to a different transmission, would a c6 be my best bet? Theres one for sale near my house for $100. Got the long tail shaft I guess i would remove it and bolt to the transfer case right?
C6s are simple to hook up. A C6 or AOD are your only option for "self-shifting" automatics in a full-sized Ford pickup. Everything else requires a computer.
Converting a long tail 4x2 C6 trans to 4x4 is not just a matter of changing the tail housing. The mainshaft has to change too, which requires completely disassembling the trans.
The F250 custom is likely the light duty version. D44hd/semi float 10.25 with a 302/AOD/1356 combo. Someone rebuilt the 351 and swapped it in.
The 351/AOD only came factory in the crown vic with a special tow package option.

That sounds pretty accurate, I think Ill just keep the AOD until i get troubles from it. The F250 Im swapping the engine into is going to have a camper on the back almost full time. i believe its about 2000-2500lbs. It has airbag suspension in the rear already. Think the AOD is up to the task?

Short answer is..... not likely the AOD will last with that load full time. Unless you keep it out of OD, it may live longer.
I just moved my 24' 5th wheel with my 89 F250 and the AOD did not like that load at all. Got hot quickly as the 1st gear of the AOD is 2.40:1, lot of torque converter heating. The E4OD has 2.71:1 1st gear which will help out alot. Not sure what the C6 1st gear ratio is........

Hmm, I can try to find a ZF with the SBF bellhousing instead.. as this one is already a 5 speed. could probably leave the shifter in as its the same tranny just different non removable bellhousings.
