96 5.0 manual to auto trans

Hello all,
I am looking at swapping out my m5odr2 in favour of an automatic transmission. Looking at an aod or aode. Just wondering if all the electrical would be there for the aode or what i would need for the swap. Any recommendations on the trans would be appreciated! Thanks!

Nope... sorry you would be looking at a fairly involved(not plug and play) wiring addition to the truck to use a 4R70w or E4OD, so your easy options are the all mechanical AOD or C6.

Well thats ok with me... Would prefer to keep it simple! So what woukd be the preferred automatic for a mild horsepower application? Might do a cam later and have a set of headers to install but not much. Else.
Thanks !!

An AOD that has all it's updates and a shift kit will have no problem with a 5.0, I had one behind a pretty healthy 5.8 for years and it went on to out live the truck.

What kind of updates would you recommend? Ive read a little bit about these transmissions, like the "j mod" but Ive never really messed with transmissions other than removing or installing them. A friend has what may be an aod out of a late 80s tbird... Havent looked at it yet.
Thanks!!

Is your truck 2wd?

The AOD was continuously upgraded over it's life with better parts so the later the model you start with the better, the '80s models trans and those from cars were particularly weak. the common upgrades include installing wider bands and bigger clutch packs that were found in the 4r70w, a stronger input shaft and a shift kit to eliminate the soft mushy shifts that kill any auto trans. If you buy a core consider just taking it straight to a rebuilder or exchange it for a mail order rebuild, or if you're feeling adventurous buy a kit and do it yourself.. this will require some specialty tools though. https://transmissioncenter.net/produ...gory/ford/aod/

Yes my truck is 2wd.
So what would be the "ideal" aod to start with? One from a 3/4 or 1 ton?

Did some more reading on the jmod, which if im not mistaken only applies to the aode and 4r70w, etc.
But I understand there are some better valve bodies that can be had for the aod.

This sounds like more work than I thought

Maybe Im better off getting my m5odr2 rebuilt? I alsso have an old 4 speed toploader from an old falcon or mustang... Dont know if its any good... Its filthy so Im guessing its not in any better shape!

Thanks Conanski for sharing your knowledge!

The ideal trans would be from an early '90s 1/2 ton, they never put them in anything bigger than an F150 or behind any of the bigger motors so it's mostly 5.0 1/2 ton trucks. But if you want simple then you would be better off just buying a crate trans, there are vendors online that have various levels available, like this one.. AOD Transmission, Ford AOD Transmission, Ford Overdrive Transmission, AOD Monster Transmission

Prices seem pretty fair... A local shop wants almost 2200 for a rebuilt m5od!! (could probably find one cheaper or get mine rebuilt for a bit less)
Well it gives me something to think about... Thanks for all the info, I appreciate it! I guess Ill keep my eye out for a half ton aod in the meantime...

Just found a local 91 f150 with an e4od, he is parting it out... So how hard is it to swap the wiring over?
Would probably go with a floor shift anyways so no need for the column parts.
Thanks!

Please note you will need a starter for auto trans, manual trans starter is different.

Is that a 5.0 truck? Cause you need the PCM too and the whole engine bay wiring harness.

Ya, 5.0.
Turns out that e4od is sold already so the hunt continues...
