Troubleshoot No Start Problem

My F-350 has developed a new problem. It wont start. It wont even turn over. All Electricity is on, glow plugs glow, gauges work, lights work, but when you turn the key to the start position noting happens. Some of the indicators go dark.
Before I tear into the column I need some guidance. I even tried a jump thinking my batteries no longer handle the load. Same results. I suppose I can remove the batteries and take them in for testing. In fact, I'll probably do that now while I await your response.

2002 F-350 Superduty, 7.3 Ltr, Turbocharged. 260000+ miles.

Thanks

Dud you try moving the shifter around(assume it's an automatic)? Kind of sounds like a safety switch tyoe of issue.

Yes. I also tried moving the column up and down. I tried starting in neutral as well as in park.

Batteries are both good. 699 CCA, 12.91v on one, 646 CCA, 12.95v on the other.

Not sure about newer vehicles, but you use to be able to jumper the starter solenoid on the fender close to the battery. You could go from positive cable to the "S" terminall on the solenoid. This should energize the solenoid if it is good. Try that and see if starter will engage.

Check fuse F31 (HOT IN START) and F61 (ALWAYS HOT) in the CJB first.

The 02 Superduty doesn't have a starter relay under the hood, it has a relatively low-current starter relay in the Central Junction Box. Look for an identical relay an swap for testing.

You can go down to the starter motor itself and 1) inspect the wiring then 2) short the small to the large terminal and see if it cranks. That will tell you if the starter motor is good or not.

Did you check fuse 31 under the hood?

It was the starter relay. When I had the starter tested it sounded like crap and it failed the test. I think that they all fail regardless of age and use, but that's because I'm a cynic. Anyway, I replaced the relay and I can now start the truck.

Thanks to all who contributed.
