Speedo Cable and Grommet in F-2

Old, after-market speedo cable I put into the F-2 some 20 years ago, developed a kink awhile back, so I picked up a new cable from Carpenter's last week. The cable looks like the original one I took off of Gertie some 30 years ago, even though it is Chinese made. Seemed to be of decent quality, but there was a rough place in the cladding where it looked like the wire and strip got wadded up during the winding operation.

Be that as it may, the rough area is under the floor mat, so I installed it. Looks good, and cured the low-speed needle bounce.

While installing, I noted that the floor grommet has literally crumble away to nothingness. Sooo..., I meandered over to the Carpenter website to see about getting a new grommet. Don't know if the one they are selling looks like the original, but with that little hole for the cable through it, I can't see how one would go about stuffing the knurled cap through the opening.

Anyone have experience with installing a new speedo grommet? My thinking is that it has to be slit. I know that some grommets and seals are made, and installed that way. The original firewall grommet for the choke cable on my truck was of that style.

Opinions?

Thanks for the info Bill, I should have posted here before springing for the one I bought. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the cable is the same for both the T-98, and the optional heavy duty 3-spd.

Yes, for 1948/52, but not for 1953/56.

Damn Bill, its 8:42AM here in flyover Indiana as I write this, and you are still online. Either you get up REAL early, or you have partied on your computer all night.

Thanks once again for the information. I really need to get the parts CD for my truck. Prefer the paper edition, but don't feel like springing the over two bills for the set.

It's 6:00 AM here in LA LA Land, would be 8:00 AM in South Bend aka Studebakerville. I don't sleep very well due to spinal stenosis, diabetic nerve pain.

The bound paper edition of the 1948/56 truck catalog nor the parts C/D (that hipoparts.com scanned it from) does not include body parts for 1948/52.

There is another catalog: 1944/52 Ford Passenger Car & Truck Body Parts Catalog, there's no C/D version.

Originals are available from time to time on ebay, faxonautolit.com reprinted it, but it's 1/2 the size of the original and Faxon wants 75 bucks for it.

Carpenter wants 250 bucks for a reprint of the 1948/56 bound paper catalog: Volume 1 TEXT & VOLUME II ILLUSTRATIONS

These can also be found on ebay.

Pics from C/D version:

Again, thank you very much Bill. I have seen the print version of the body parts catalog on Ebay myself, but was unsure as to whether it was correct (there are several versions, with some for Canadian vehicles). Will look for a decent copy now that I have solid info on what I am looking for.

As soon as I write this, I am trundling over to Hipoparts and getting the CD on order. Will make life a lot easier for the myriad other parts on my truck, like the speedo. cable.

Regarding your health issues, you have my deepest sympathies. I have nothing that serious yet, but nearly 40 years of manual labor (toolmaker/welder/stone mason) have left their mark on me in the form of osteoarthritis, cataract, etc. Many nights I too, find it difficult to sleep. The joint pain has become an ever present facet of my life.

There's a well known member of this forum who lives about 30 miles east. I have extra copies of the bound paper 1948/56 catalogs, offered them to him for free, but I hate to ship, so told him if he wants them (Volume I & II), come and get 'em.

I got these from Pasadena Ford when they closed 8/2008. They're originals and are in a 1950's Ford price catalog binder. Now that I'm using the C/D version, no longer need them.

Guess his "pirate ship" won't make it this far, cuz I still have them.

Thanks Bill. I didn't know that there was a 1944-1952 body catalog. Based upon what I see on eBay it looks like there are two versions? Jan 1952 and June 1956.

I guess the later printing would be the better one to have?
