Starter Issue

Starter started to sound funny. Went to remove it and the bottom bolt was loose and the top bolt is slightly out and won't budge. Sprayed it but it has a flange. Going to get an extension and tap on it a little.

Hey Whitey it's Whitey. Try tightening the bolt back up then try to take it off. Probably something in the thread, dirt, making it hard to remove. Probably want to get it checked at the starter shop since it has 300k on it.

Thanks Whitey that worked great. Took it to my starter shop and found the armature was nearly shorted. Didn't make any indication the starter had a high amperage draw. Starter shop gave me a new not refurbished starter American made twice the weight for $145 with a 300k warranty. Had to include a few Carolina Reeper peppers though. Thanks for the heads up Whitey!

No problem Whitey glad I could help! Starter bolts should be checked regularly. Blue locktite is also good to use.

Thank you! The truck sounds like a new 6.7 starting. Very nice!

I got a good laugh out of this one. Mainly because I didn't realize you were replying to yourself until the 3rd post.

Thanks, it seems quite important to check those starter bolts every once in a while. Glad I got 13 years and 300,000 miles out of the old starter.

Yes blue, thank you! The starter guy said the old starter was a mini welder. It was like shorting jumper cables together. He said the truck must be in good shape and start quick. Any extended start would have killed batteries and alternator and melted wire.

I didn't look. Probably American made, everything else is junk in his eyes.

My bolts back out even with medium-strength "blue" Loc-Tite. It seems like every month or two it would sound weird starting up, I'd go wiggle the starter...and it would really wiggle. Usually the bolts were back out a thread or two, sometimes a lot more. I used the "red" Loc-Tite this last time and so far the starter has stayed put for 2 months and counting.
