Can anybody pick out an identifying detail on this engine block? I have been toying with the idea of building an engine from the block up, and this one is already unbolted at the junkyard. I'd like to build either a 460 or 351W. Could this be the lucky block?

It looks like a 302 to me. The short deck height is what gave it away to me

Thanks for the vote. The vin tag was almost completely faded, so no help there....who agrees with rock15t?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of a 302 vs. 351W in terms of performance, gas mileage, durability, etc?

That's a 5.0, see attached pic of my 5.8 transplant going in next week.

5.8 has more horses more torque, maybe 2 less mpg, similar durability

Perhaps I'll keep looking. There are likely some 5.8 engines at the junkyard, but none as ready to be pulled.

Since I already have a big, heavy 4x4 work truck, I have been toying with the idea of building a muscle/street truck. 2wd, short bed, regular cab, built from the frame up with performance in mind. Nothing wild, but something that will be fun to put the pedal to the floor. Haven't decided on which body style to go with yet....either OBS or pre-72.

Alternatively, I have been thinking about a Bronco as a more family-friendly option.

I'd stay away from a 302,just not enough cubes for a heavy truck. 351 or even better a 460. Boost either way!

A slammed 2wd Bronco would be nice.

No replacement for displacement, right? The search continues
