Best Engine

I have a 95 F-150 5.0 and am going to build an engine to drop in it. What is the best 5.0 block (year, model) to rebuild?

How big is your wallet? How much power are you expecting to make? Big horsepower requires BIG money. Ford's new Boss 302 block is killer, but it is gonna cost you. Many have upgraded to the 351W. I suggest a roller-ready block, aka F4TE casting. If you really want some big ponies go with an aftermarket block and stroker kit. Several good running 393-427Ws running around these days.

I was just looking for a simple rebuild, nothing fancy. I want to get a used block to keep the cost down. My truck is a daily driver so gas mileage and reliability are important.

For a standard rebuild any of the late model blocks would be good. I think from the mid-to late 80's the 302 blocks were roller ready. Others on the board will probably have some info to correct me if I am wrong.

Keeping the cubic inches down could potentially help your mileage so a swap to a 351 may not be in order. If you feel your 302 is adequate for your current situation, stick with that motor.
