Tim's ZF5 Adapter Is Available!
Look what Tim has posted on his web site! The adapter, looking somewhat familiar, is available as part of a kit:
Looks like for $299 you get the adapter and pilot bearing, a flywheel drilled for a 460 clutch, and ARP pressure plate and flywheel bolts. Where was all of that when I was playing pioneer? (I heard Mr. Custer on the radio yesterday, and that's kinda what I felt like when all the arrows were flying around.) I'd have been thrilled to go that way and not have to figure out what 460 clutch plate will fit under a 351M's pressure plate. And, I REALLY would have been happy to have not had the 460's throwout bearing chewed up by the 351M pressure plate's fingers - and have to find that a Dodge throwout bearing works.
Anyway, looks like Tim has given us a kit that takes all of the problems areas away from the ZF5 swap. With his kit you just need to add a 460 clutch kit and a 351W auto tranny starter. Oh yes, and a ZF5 from a 460.

Tim - I'm just happy that a kit is finally available to let people to use a more modern transmission in trucks with the 335 series engines. The non-OD manual transmissions, like the T-18/19 and NP435, leave the engines spinning so rapidly on the highway that all economy is lost. But, with the ZF5 you can have both the low 1st gear of the other transmissions as well as an OD top gear. In other words, the best of both worlds.
But, heretofore we've had to piece things together - like the "small" 460 clutch plate, a Dodge throwout bearing, etc. Now there's a straightforward way to adapt that tranny. However, there's a downside - anyone can do it and those of us who were able to find our way through the maze are no longer "special".

Oh man!! This seems awesome! Question is how much power can be put to the ZF5 before the thing self destructs and are there versions to hook up to the NP205 transfer case to have 4X4? I don't have the slightest clue about the ZF5 all I know is OVERDIRVE SOUNDS AMAZING for the highway! lol

There are two versions of the ZF5 - S42 that is rated at 420 ft lbs, and an S47 rated at 470. But, they were used behind the 460's and diesels and can withstand a lot more than that.
As for the transfer case, Ford used the same bolt pattern for their t-cases so you can mix and match. I ran an NP208 behind my ZF that originally came with a BW1356. Bolted right up.

So it's possible to snag a ZF5 from a diesel and slap it in my 77 ford?! I'm expecting to have more than 500 lb/ft I really don't want to rip things apart.
I have now seen the pearly gates.
lol
