Why so much work at lower ball joint, F250 ld 2wd 99?

Need to replace driver lower ball joint at F250 ld 99 2 wheel drive. In Hanes manual it say that I must replace entire control arm. At internet it say that I need to pull out brake caliper, rotor, disconnect tie rod. Can I simple unscrew lower ball joint, separate steering knuckle and control arm and press out lower ball joint of control arm?

YEs, the original service manual said it was a unit, but they have been making replacement ball joints for 15 years. I have done several on the 4 x 4 ........ assume the 2 x 4 is no different.
