I have been searching, and I checked the Tech Post at the top, and I am just going to break down and ask;
To replace the lower ball joint in a 1999 4x4 Ranger, do I need a new lower control arm, or can the ball joints be replaced?
According to the service manual (Haynes) I need to replace the control arm, but when searching on the AutoZone website, it shows ball joints for my truck. I do not know just how smart the search is at the AutoZone site is so I thought I would ask.
Any help from someone who has done this would be greatly appreciated. I am not worried if I have to replace the control arm, but I would much rather do the joint only.
Ball joints for this truck are replaceable, press-in pieces. Haynes is probably referencing the fact that to press them out on a shop press you need to remove the control arm from the vehicle. Using a readily-available C-frame press and an impact gun, you can do these on the vehicle. You are, however, wise to doubt any parts information that comes directly from Zippy-zone.
