F250 ignition key / switch

I have a 1999 F250 7.3L PSD 2WD with 200K miles (I bought it with 180K miles) and just discovered the ignition key can be easily pulled out of the ignition switch with the engine running. Is it supposed to do that? If so, why? Thanks.

Probably just worn out. How does the key look?
Is it worn down?

Ah....good point! Just tested it....yes the key that slips out is an OEM key and well worn. I tried my spare key (much newer) and it is retained. Thanks for the input. Makes sense now.
