signs of somthing?
ok, had new brake pads calipers put on about a month ago, the next day after they were put on, i was backing out of my driveway and i started hearing a clinking sound, then i did it going forward too, so i took the truck down to where i had my calipers replaced, and he pulled out what looked like a piece of sheet metal from somewhere behind the caliper. I dont know what it was, maybe a dust shield, which would explain my problem, but anyway, ever since, i wash my truck, clean all the wheels nicely, then about a week later they will all be clean with the exception of the front drivers side wheel, which will be full of somthing that looks like brake dust. I was just wondering if the piece of metal he pulled out was the dust sheild and i shouldnt worry about it, or if its a sign of somthing else, like i need new rotors. (i was told by a trusted mechanic that they looked a little thin) about the time i had new calipers put on. any ideas on the subject would be great. Thanks

well, if it didnt happen before what you think was the dust shield was taken out, then it probably was the dust shield. and if it didnt make the sound before the brakes were done, then they probably messed the dust shield up (like bent it or something). you should take it back to them, again, and tell them that they messed it up, then took it out, and you want a new one.

I agree it is probably a dust shield that was making the noise and they simply yanked it off. I'd ask for a replacement, explaining that there was no noise and no brake dust before your brought your truck to them.
And if they whine and cry about it and won't budge, then I would at least try and get them to install another one free of labor charge, even if you have to buy the part yourself.

I think next time i'll just do it myself, with the help of this great forum, its hard to screw it up, especially with somthing as simple as changing a caliper (so i hear anyway). but thanks for the info, i guess my major concern was that it wasnt somthing scraping the pad material off, like a really bad rotor, or somthing like that.
