Would replacing a 3.0 v6 in a 1994 Mazda B3000 with a 4.0 V6 from a 92 Ranger be reasonably straight forward. I have an offer for a 4.0 that beats any other offers I've ogt so I'd like to go for it. However, I recently swapped out my 1988 mazda B2200 engine for a japanese import 2.0 liter iand that ended up being quite a bit more work than I'd planned (swapping out all the various engine pipes, hoses, accessories etc). I'd prefer in the future to pay a bit more money and get an engine thats not double or more the work to swap out. Any thoughts?

It'll be semi-straightforward, since the 4.0 was a factory option AND you are getting a USA offered engine, unlike your previous experience!
You need the underhood harness, which may include the engine harness--or get a 94 version if you haven't gotten that!
Either way, get the harness with everything you can get attached to it, because piecing one together is a PITA--I tried to swap from carb to MPFI on my old truck and I ran out of time to grab the last sensor or two I needed....
Someone will chime in, but you might need to grab the 4.0L tranny....
Everything should bolt in, but you'd want to get a factory manual to show the layout, since some things might be moved around between the 3.0 and 4.0L--I wish I could tell you how much, but the closest B-truck I can find is a 95 4.0 with OBD-2, which wouldn't help as much....label everything if you have to get a harness seperately. Helps when putting things together.
this is why im not a big fan of the high-tech motors, too many sensors, computer compatability problems, ect. if i ever need a motor , i think i would try an old 302-2v with a c-5 or c-6. a lot less wires to mess with. (and yes, im not in a emissions test location) just my 2 cents._______'93 ranger 4.0 s/c 4x4 5spd
I am in the process of swapping a 2002 4.0 sohc motor(and everything else) in to a 98 body. There are lots of problems; all can be taken care of with off the shelf parts. Here are the main points I found so far.
1. Getting the sohc motor to run. Darn alarm system, I had to rekey the steering column, and then get the locksmith to reset the computer. So rekey column $20.00, two keys $30.00, reprogram CPU $70. TOTAL $120.00. will also have to rekey the doors.
2. Wiring. The 98 had 4 cly motor and I will basically have to rewire the entire truck. Not a problem as I have all the wiring on the 02 truck. Anyone who wants the details of the reasons I will send them to you. Suffice to say the 98 wire harness has 3 connectors in the firewall and the 02 has 2 in the firewall and 1 under the drivers’ seat. And no you can't use the 98 harness with the 02 sohc. This also means you have to rewire the complete dash! Note: it would be much better to use the 02 dash in the 98 cab, but mine is the wrong color.(and I have lots of time)
Body is a bolt to bolt match, not much to say here.
I will change the radiator to the one for a v6, the 4cly might work, but its not worth using a high millage radiator in my opinion. $200.

In california, a engine swap must be the same year or newer and have the emissions of that perticular engine in order to be smog legal. Unless its going to be registerd as a recreational vehicle.
