So I finally decided to tear into the 1998 4.0 intakes to replace the gaskets and eliminate the pesky lean bank 1 lean bank 2 CEL codes. I bought a 2000 f350 about 1.5 years ago and the ranger has just been sitting. Not really sure what the future holds for that truck but this needed to be done. So far I have the upper and the valve covers off. I will probably take the lower intake off this weekend. One of my questions is, are most of you just cleaning up your intakes real well and reusing them? Or are you replacing them with after market parts? Mine are pretty filthy but I would assume with some degreaser and elbow grease I can get them back in shape. Anything else I should be considering while it is opened up? The engine has about 275,000 on it. I was considering replacing the injectors too.

Look through this thread for good info & photos by member Rockledge, on replacing the upper & lower intake manifold gaskets. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/2...ke-gasket.html

Unless you see some pitting or other defects, there is no need to replace the manifolds. Clean them up good and reuse.

Thanks for the info. Rockledge your write up was extremely helpful. I printed it up and had it outside with me during the tear down. What would you recommend for cleaning? Simple green or some TSP maybe?

If the intakes are really dirty with caked-on carbon, you will probably need something stronger. You might want to pick up a few spray cans of Berryman's B-12...it cuts through that stuff as well as anything I've ever tried.

Have plenty of rags on hand, as well.

I'll check it out. Is that something sold at local auto parts stores or more of an internet item?

You can find it at most auto parts stores. I get it from Advanced Auto. I think even Walmart carries it.
