Towing Heavy...

What do you guys tow with your 250 Crew 4x4's and what does it weigh? I'm curious to know how far some pushes it, of course safely. Today when I looked up the listed tow weigh for my truck I was very surprised it was only 9600#. I latch onto 8K all the time like its nothing and can run as fast as I want to. Which I will only do 5 over at anytime. I know 1600# doesn't or cant make that much difference, of course its more I get that, but not that much more.

So what do you run with yours, GTW?

9,600 lbs doesn't seem right.

Take a look through this thread, lots of pictures of trucks pulling stuff:

The 9600# GVWR is the rating for the weight on the truck the towing ratings aren't listed on the door sticker. Obviously I don't pay attention to either rating.

The OP's truck looks lifted with larger tires than stock, so don't count on being able to pull as much as everyone else. The lift hinders your truck's ability to handle appropriately when loaded down, and the larger tires reduce your overall gearing which reduces your overall gearing. I'm sure you're fine with your 8,000 lb Jeep trailer, but I wouldn't put much more behind it.

GCWR - GVWR = Trailer weight rating.

In your case.

'07 F250 V10 CC 4x4 GCWR is 22.5k GVWR is 9.6k

So that means your rated for 12.9K of trailer weight. (a little less if your running 4.10 gears).

Don't mis-interpret what I'm saying. Thats just the rating, not what your truck can do.

Also, you have to factor in Tongue weight, Cargo-in-the-bed weight, fuel, and passengers, into GVWR. if your already over GVWR, your trailer weight has to come down so you don't exceed GCWR.

9600 GVWR is the maximum weight your truck should ever weigh..

GVWR is Curb weight (dry, ~7k ) + fluids + passengers + cargo

Cargo Capacity is your GVWR - (Curb weight + fluids + passengers)

I towed 23,000lbs from maine to NYC in 1995 using a ford windstar which had a 3.8 engine.

it was all costal roads with no hills.

I made the trip OK.

But it took me some time to figure out why I had a rotational nock in the engine which turned out to be worn main bearings due to the excessive tow weight.

point being you can probally tow a lot more than the recommended spec...at a cost to either equipment life or personal safety.

All great responses thank you. I didn't actually get the 9600# rating from the door I got it from a tow chart from Ford. But that makes sense to me that that is total truck weight. And I would never even come close to 29000#, don't have anything that heavy. I'm surprised twigs that someone isn't telling you how bad that is but it would seem clear to me that you handle it well.

I'm looking at doing about 11.5 with mine, with a gooseneck which I feel isn't bad. As for the 8K I do all the time now even lifted its nothing and that is bumper pull. I know opinions will vary but that good, its what I was looking for. I actually bought my truck as is, well I've changed it some, but basically the same and last summer towing my Jeep to Colorado it was awesome, I was actually surprised at how strait and easy it went.

Any way, this being my 3rd SD diesel I've never towed over the 8K so I thought I'd see what all you are doing. Thank you for your posts...

... unless you have pictures. Those vans could only tow up to 3,500 pounds due to front wheel drive.

That's funny, I had a Windstar for brief time and it wouldn't get 3500# out the drive way. It was brief! None-the-less I wouldn't call anyone out on that however I wouldn't put 23,000# on my truck to go across the street. Maybe it was 2300#?

Oh and where is the smilely with the little guy eating "pop-corn"... C'mon guys you have to add that little dude!

I've in the past gotten a lot of crap for buying a Ford super duty from Chevy and Dodge guys, offering to hook my trailer up to their truck and load it kind of killed that. Lol. As far as handling the load it does an awesome job. My biggest concern was the rear tires but haven't had any problems with the tires heating up, I've checked them with a IR thermometer as well as all the driveline and break components and really haven't had any excess heat after 50+ miles of 55-60 mph towing. If anyone wants to give me a hard time for pulling to heavy it will fall on deaf ears, i've driven overloaded pick ups before and mine is definitely not overloaded it's literally playing with the trailer as crazy as that might sound.
