Clark 285V/265VO swap

Clark 285V/265VO swap
Would like to swap the 285V Clark trans in my 68N250 dump for two reasons, it is geared too low for the highway, and the synchros are tired. The replacement would be a 265VO from my 53C750. I removed it when I went to a direct and 3 spd aux. I'm sure the 265V will bolt up, but could be the input shafts are not the same. Another consideration is the PTO, will, it fit?
I'll be driving the '68 from NY to TN shortly and sure would like a bit taller gearing! Any expert advice sure would be welcome. Thanks.

I'm sure the pto's are the same and the VO should slide right in, but you
didnt mention what engine you have? So you may have to play around
with pilot bearings or clutch disks. All I know I went the opposite. I
put a 1968 VO into a 1953 F900 only difference I had to drill and tap the
VO case for the 1953 clutch bracket. I run 391FTs so the pilot bearing
is already (that big) I slid mine right in.....

all my trucks have 391's & OD VO's. and the later ones shift like a dream, no overdrive whine just nice

Sam, The '68 has either a 361 or 391 FT. The difference in the 265 vs the 285 is probably torque capacity. As long as the input shafts are the same length, I can cope with clutch disk and pilot bearing. the PTO is also mounted further back on the 265, but I wanted to re-engineer that anyway as a less than perfect job was done in the conversion to a dump from a highway tractor, (Yellow Freight in it's first life). Thanks for your advice and experience.

Maybe I can clarify the whine (if i can) the early Clarks (OD) only had
syncros with 4th & 5th those had a slight whine in 5th. Next bunch with
syncros in 3rd, 4th, 5th very slight barely audible the later Clark ODs
are silent, I think you said, yours is a 1968 Clark, then your good to go.
These shift so sweet don't need no clutch either.

I may in fact have to go the auxillary route. Did that on my '53 C750, and it worked out well. However, that dos not address the need for my main to be rebuilt. In my search for a 285VO I have come to realize how scarce they have become and sought after as well. I do have to mention however, that shifting without the clutch is a good way to wear out the synchros prematurely.
I wonder if a newer tranny will bolt up, such as one that was behind a 370 or 429.

What are you trying to accomplish? There may be another way besides pulling one of those out of the pile.
