help! big problem.

1964- f-100. engine 223 Manual 3 speed.
Hey everyone, well we got to putting my clutch in the other night and ran into a problem. My throw out bearing is to small for my clutch fork. THe clutch we installed was a 10 inch. We bought the hole kit. How do I figure out what size throw out bearing will fit.
The tranny we are installing is a 1968 and form a car. dont know what kind of car. i had the tranny numbers decoded on here and was told it is from a 68 car.

We are this close to getting my truck where I can move it and now this. Any ideas would be great.
THanks
Matt

Take the clutch fork with you to the parts store, find a REAL parts store, like NAPA, not a Kragen and take the clutch kit with you and match it up.

I guess I'll be pulling the clutch back out tomorrow afternoon to take it with me. Could I just that the bearing that came with the kit and go from there?
Thanks
Matt

If you have a '64 truck, I believe that was the last year of the big clutch throw-out bearing. If you are trying to put in a passenger car trans, it would be the small size. The easiest fix could be to swap in a later throw-out fork. (The other way would be to swap in a truck input shaft housing (the piece the throwout bearing installs on, but it might be harder to find.)

If you have a forged steel throwout fork, you will probably have to change bellhousings to be able to use the later stamped steel type of fork. There might be a fork that will fit - hopefully somebody on FTE has had this same problem.

The above is based on my limited knowledge of what you actually have. An extremely good parts guy could help you through this, but they are rare these days, even at NAPA.

P.S.: Remember the outside of the bearing carrier has to fit the fork, the inside of the bearing carrier has to fit the trans, and the diameter of the bearing has to fit the clutch fingers. This makes for an interesting puzzle.

will this work

I have the original tansmisson from the truck. It ia all froze up. Could I inter change the throwout bearing collar form the old tranny to the tranny I'm putting in and use the big clutch trowout bearing that fits the original clutch fork and the original tranny?

Thanks for you help,
Matt

Matt,

I know you cannot easily tell me the names & numbers of your transmissions, so the best I can say is "maybe". The bolt pattern (# of bolts and spacing dimensions) has to match AND the counter-bore that seats the front bearing has to be the same. The outside diameter is also important because it locates the transmission on the bore of the bellhousing. It is not too big a deal to take them off - buy one new gasket for the trans you are putting together. Another option would be to press a sleeve on the input shaft housing. This could even be fabricated by boring out the one from the other transmission, but would require a lathe. It could be made with a tight sliding fit and secured with Locktite stud & bearing mount. There is not a lot of force trying to move it.

If you got a clutch kit that fits your late input shaft, I would expect that the clutch fingers on the pressure plate would be too long for proper operation on your large bearing. The best solution would be to swap for the proper pressure plate for your truck. If they will not swap, return the kit if possible and get all the correct parts individually. As stated before, a really good parts man can help you through this, but most are only prepared to sell you a kit & move on to the next customer.

They don't help me, but there are others on FTE that have the books to decode them, so we will wait and see . . .

The second number probably is: C8AR-7006-C

All I can say is that it is probably out of a '68 or later.

The first number seems to be a little short - is there something before the "AF"?
