Pulleys all around, PS especially

Hey, all.

Just got here tonight after getting a '96 f-250 7.3 with 142K miles on her dial.

While I am very happy with what she is and all of that, She's a mystery to me. Her work history and upkeep are a bit foggy. Which means that out of common practicality I am changing fluids and similar to know that the consumables are sorted out.

So, it looks like she was parked under a tree near a swamp. Mildew growing on every surface (especially where they didn't think to clean). The engine bay is dirtier than any of my other vehicles ever was EXCEPT the front of the engine.... and there is a squeal from the serpentine belt.

I figure the previous owner power washed it to impress someone and blew the grease out of the bearings. New idler pulleys and tensioner put on (will replace bearings on originals to keep on the shelf). Tugged on the remaining pulleys and the only one with any play was the Power Steering one. I noticed the dribble and muck collected on the steering box, so a bit of a question came up:

SHOULD I put a new FORD PS Pump on, aftermarket one or is there a repair which could be made to sort this out?

If you want a stock replacement go with ford. Make sure to replace the hoses while you are at it. The high pressure hose is a weak point on these. There is a company that makes an up graded pump and kit if you wanted to go that rout. It's around $500.

Dear God! Getting the PS pump (still attached to the bracket) off was a bugger. I think this truck has seen salty roads as the bolts were either factory tight still, corroded or both.

HOW do I get the pulley off of the shaft? There is a lip at the center, there are three large holes in the pulley's flat surface, there is a hex key and threads inside the shaft. Still no book to be found locally.

The Ford dealership said that there are TWO different types of PS pumps for this year Power Stroke: JY and JX. They only had the JY in stock and as luck would have it, mine is a JX. Are they interchangeable at all?

I'm pretty sure the pulley has to be pulled off and pressed into the new pump.

Thanks. The multitude of choices gave me pause.

Yes, you need a puller kit.

About PS pumps, as far as I know there are two different reservoirs, one for the Super Duty models with an extra nipple for the brake hydroboost return and one for the regular F series with only one nipple. The reservoirs are slightly different but the pumps themselves are the same.

There's a free online service manual with a link from the thread below:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ce-manual.html

Napa, O'reilly's and the other usual suspects sell puller kits with adapters to fit most recent automotive pulleys. The kit also has a tool for pressing them back on.

I've had my '96 F250 for about a year. I spent hours reading through a lot of the old threads here and it's really paid off. Lots of times when you have a problem there is not just a fix as in replacing the old part with the same part, but an upgraded part or parts that make the motor better than before.

Good luck with your truck, I'm very happy with mine, but it's taking some time and $$ to get it into shape. Still a LOT cheaper and more fun than paying the price for a new one!

Bad none diesel made the kit Glenn. I couldn't find it on there site but I just emailed them about it a month ago. They said they didn't have any made up at the time but they still can put a kit together for me. What I liked about it is that it used hydraulic hose and fittings that could be made up easy if it blew.
