It got quite cold today. I fired my '95 7.3, and after it had sat idling a while, I noticed a small oil spot under him. I noticed I couldn't see any oil coming down, or any on the bottom of the engine. I got a sheet of paper, set it over the spot of oil, weighed it down, and kicked the throttle a couple of times to see if pressure changes caused it to leak. I had a small spray of oil come down as soon as I brought the RPM up. I let him warm up more, and did it again. Not nearly as much of a leak. The spot is directly below the "cover" that's under the clutch, putting it just behind the oil pan. I'm trying, but I can't really tell where it's coming from. I'm not feeling any oil on the end plugs in the heads, I'm not seeing any on the block, but some does pooch out from under the "cover" under the clutch. That'll get pulled tomorrow to inspect up in there when I have more light.
Any clues, guys? I was wondering if it could be something in my oil cooler (Apparently they have a habit of failing when it gets cold) one of the lines on the HPOP, although I'm not sure if any run to a place that could cause this. I wondered if it could be HPOP just because of the fact that the increased pressure caused the leak to worsen. I wondered for a moment if my main seal could be leaking, but if that was the case, wouldn't it leak constantly, not just while the engine was running? If anyone has an idea of how to narrow my search, I'd love to hear it. I've been sorta beating my head against random stuff trying to figure this out.
I looked through the valley. I didn't see anything up there, other than some diesel that's pooling (I get to tear that apart again, had something new spring a leak).
I'm gonna be dropping this trans in a couple of weeks, if it's the main seal, I'll get it fixed then.
