Late 5.4L V8 Issues... '09-'10 trucks

Hey all, I'm looking at getting back into an F150, currently looking at the 09-10 years. I remember when I had my '08 that there was some concerns over the cam phasers in the 5.4L from 04-08. I was wondering if those issues had been addressed with some changes or updates in parts and such? I'm looking at a 1 owner '09 with 130k kms on it, I can pick it up for $12500, which is a fair deal in these parts. Its an Ext Cab/4x4/xtr, private sale, one owner truck. Hoping to look at it and possibly pick it up this week.

Thanks for any and all your input!!

Hello, as far as I know they still have the possibly of can phaser problems but not as common. One big weak link is the trans especially on 2009 trucks a seal that fails causing leaks and there is an internal issue as well but hopefully someone else will chime in to help. Also if it makes a difference 2010 had e- fans. Best of luck truck hunting

I own a 2009 F-150 Lariat with 4x4 and 130,500 miles. The only problem I've had with it is the intake gaskets have a leak. I spent way too much on this because I'm an idiot and didn't take it straight to a Ford mechanic first. This is my second Ford with a Ram sandwiched between them.

I don't want to own any other truck than an F-150. My grandpa drove Chevys and GMCs, my dad has driven Toyotas since 1989. My first vehicle was a Ford truck. Love them, highly recommended them.

Being a while ago we had a 06 F150 5.4L 2wd crew cab XLT that was a problem all the time I thought we would never get another 5.4L.

After reading less complaints on the 5.4L of the 09-10s I decided to get another 5.4L.

The cam phaser problem is still a possibility. I hope you like the truck as much as I am liking our 10 F150.

Also tritonF150 I never knew 10 F150s came stock with E-fans I thought maybe the PO put ours in our 10 F150.

My father in law has 135,+++miles on his 06 and the only issue has been the spark plugs seizing, cost him $800 to have them removed. They fixed that issue in the 09-10 years as they changed the design of the plugs due to the aluminum heads.

When I was shopping for my new to me truck I choose the 2010 because it is the last year of the 5.4l. Ford is well aware of problems with this engine over a newer one was my thought but hey that's how I sleep at night lol

Thanks for your replies Fellas. I've put quite a few hundred thousand kms on Ford trucks in my years of driving... Briefly had a '81 gmc, and a '06 Cummins, but those were both used to save wear and tear on a Ford truck

I'll head back into a 5.4L with confidence. I had that motor in my '08 F150, the truck I should have kept. 150,000 trouble free kms with that one.

Have a great evening!!

I would hope that a 2009 truck with that mileage would have already been symptomatic and repaired if at all. I'd get it and love it.

I've owned an 09 for the past 3 yrs / 110k km don't get me wrong I like Ford's but have spend a lot of money on it
Clutchpacks 900
New rear diff 1200
Camphasers 2000
Tranny software update 180
Nevermind all the other costly things that I can't remember right now

Still doesn't shift nice after the update
still vibrates/jerks when pulling a trailer (probably something with the tranny coming up soon) total of 230k km on it now best money I spend on it was the Detroit Truetrac
but yeah I wouldn't buy a GM product either lol

I have a 10 with a 5.4 and just turned 200,000 km and it's starting the cam phaser b.s. Im pretty disappointed in the truck I have been driving Ford trucks for 25 years and this is the most money I have spent on a truck and now at 5 years old it's got serious engine issues? My 92 flareside has 350 000 on it and never had a valve cover off.
Do the 4.6's have the same issues?

the 4.6 is a 2v motor and doesn't have cam phasers. I can't remember if Ford offered a 3v version of the 4.6 or not.

IMO the 4.6 motor was a better engine than the 5.4 during the entire 4.6/5.4 run. Power wasn't much less and there were a lot less internal issues with the 4.6 than the 5.4.

Yes their is a 3 valve 4.6L but not sure if it was in the trucks or just the cars and SUVs. I am pretty sure it came out the same year as the 5.4L got it.

2009-2010 F150's had both the 4.6-2v and 4.6-3v available.
4.6-3v's came with the 6r80 transmission only
4.6-2v's came with the 4r75 transmission only

Thanks for all your replies on this topic. I ended up purchasing a 2002 F150 5.4L 4x4 with pretty low miles (kms) for the year. Its got 208k (128k miles) on it, runs and sounds very good, and must have had a very easy life as the front end hasn't been touched yet.

Have a great day everyone!!

Its too bad that the 5.4 motors had some issues. My 09 hasn't had anything go wrong with it. Granted, it only has 45k miles on it. Or maybe I just got one of the good ones.

Only issues I've experienced are water leaks, squeaks and rattles. Nothing mechanical, though...
