F-150 longevity

If any of you were to go and look at an 06-09 F-150 with a 5.4, at what mileage would you say you would stop at? I know it mostly has to do with how it was treated and maintained, but assuming all was good, how much is too much? I see alot of nice looking Fords in that range with 100,00+ miles on them but I don't really have a ton of experience with trucks that high. What would be some red flags and what usually goes wrong with mileage that high?

Can someone elaborate on the cam phaser problem? I am seriously looking for a newer style F150 (2004 up) with 5.4L and was advised by a Certified Ford Technician to skip the 2004-2005 because of some problems which were addressed in the 2006 up models. Unfortunately, my price range doesn't allow too much flexibility here so any good info would be appreciated.

Ive had 2 04's first went 230k with out a problem then wrecked it. Current one now has 160k and have had a few minor problems none huge that wasnt my fault (tranny). Id say stop looking at around the 150k miles range give take depending on the truck. There great trucks and I wouldnt hesitate too buy one with 200k aslong as it was really cheap but thats if It was cheap and well cared for

If I were going older, I'd have to sacrifice the power of the 5.4L 3V and go for a 4.6L equipped truck. Yes, far less power, same MPG's but overall more reliable. The '04's - 08's use the same transmissions and axles. Look at the staggering numbers of Crown Vic fleet cars that were produced over the years and still running.

If looking at an 04-05 5.4 try to find out if the phasers, timing chain guides and tensioners have been replace. These parts were updated for the 06. If they were replaced on an 04-05 the updated parts should have been installed. Or look for a 4.6 as tseekins suggested no issues with those engines.
