Options with stripped oil drain plug

7.3 diesel. Ive had a fram sure drain installed for 13 years, never had a problem, until i noticed it started leaking, i pulled it out and a small piece of the pan thread came with it, i didnt want to reinstall it so i bought a standard drain plug. I used a new gasket and wrapped the threads with white plumbers tape, 4k miles later it is wet around the plug and im prolly a quart low.

Im thinkink of installing a fumoto f-111 with a new gasket, wrapping the threads in white plumbers tape and also this time applying some type of rtv sealant, black red or blue? Not sure of the color. Then hopefully i wont have to remove the actuall drain plug for another 13 years. Any other ideas?

One other question, will a 7.3 shut down automatically with no oil pressure before it blows up? Im just paranoid of this fumoto malfunctioning and draining as im headed down the highway.

If the oil gets low enough, it won't be able to fire the injectors before you damage any bearings.

The 7.3 HEUI injection system uses high pressure oil to run. If you have low oil or a massive oil leak the truck will not run. Reason why low oil is one of the first things to check for with a no start condition.

oriellys here has a plug that has a piece of all thread on it with a folding T type thing on it you can stick up and pull down and it wont let it fall back out then ya tighten it up to seal a rubber seal against the bottom of the pan.... used it on a 90 5.8 we had several years ago.... worked fine tell the truck burned to the ground

^This is likely your problem on the current fix. Get yellow tape plumbers tape, or some over thread sealing alternative

They sell a kit just for that type of repair.... It retaps the drain plug like .5 mm... ( the drain plug itself actually retaps the threads).. Used them a few times no leaks.. Good luck

Well i wemt out to drain the oil and the plug was almost able to be taken out by hand, guess the tape made it loosen up, i guess i know why it didnt leak leak the first month and now it is leaking. I went and got some permatex thread sealent, not locker, gonna try that with a copper washer, i just dont like the idea that fumoto could malfunction and drain the oil without knowing it. My fram sure drain had a cap, thx for the responces

Used one on a friends car after a quick lube place cross threaded the original oil plug..worked great..

Good luck

Nothing will happen on these trucks if you have a catastrophic leak. The injectors will shut down aka motor stops. If you are in a position to break a Fumoto I'd be more concerned about busting my oil pan which will be a gigantic nightmare to fix.

I put the Fumoto plug / valve on mine a couple of years ago just to prevent what you are going through. Install it once and then just use the valve, i think the lever locks pretty good (shouldn't be a problem)

If your worried about the the valve opening... You can install a spring clamp as a secondary lock... I have a oil valve on my coach... I have it set up with 4" of clear hose with a cap at the end... So in order to accidentally open... The spring clamp would need to fall off..the valve would need turn and open.. And the plug at the end of the hose would need to fall out...
