oil drain plug problem

Basically it won't stop leaking. It drips about a quarter size puddle of oil over night right from the plug.I even went to Ford and got a new plug and it still leaks. I know I didn't over tighten it, and it's not loose, and the treads look good.I've always changed my oil myself and never had a problem like this.....What give's?

Any ideas?Any solutions or suggestions on what I can do?

As greythorn3 mentioned, a missing gasket is the first thing to check.

Look closely at the surface on the oil pan where the gasket seals. If that has a deep scratch or discontinuity, the oil will leak along that path. You can carefully blend the scratch into the surrounding metal with some emery paper and then re-install the plug (or better yet, install a Furmoto valve).

It is also possible that the oil is leaking from above and just seems to be coming from the drain plug. Wipe down the oil pan after running the truck for a while and check for oil a few hours later.

I 3rd a Fumoto. It will prevent you from ever having to worry about making sure the plug is tight once it has been installed.

I am using a fram suredrain. Dorman makes oversized plugs and replacement copper washers if you want to stay with the stock style bolt.

usually the metal washers are "crush" washers", designed to crush and seal when tightened. they are also usually recommended to be changed every time the plug is removed. certainly not necessary, but if you have a leak, i would replace the washer with a new before anything else. most auto parts stores have a selection of them, just take yours in to match it up. i also use the fumoto on all my vehicles and love it, for this and other reasons.
