zf5 rebuild cost

Just a basic cost guess I'm buying a transmission and case s542. And since it's already out how much would it cost to have someone run through it and make sure it functions properly.

it depends. A basic rebuild kit(bearings, seals, syncros) is $250
Then the labor to do it.

My trans guy charges me $450 total when I hand him a trans

I have gone through a few of these, Cost for seals, synchronizer kit, might need sliders, and the bearings tend to break once in a while while pressing them off so figure high on parts, $200+ and be pleasantly surprised if yours goes more successfully. Good luck.

Will the s547 parts fit in s542 trans since it's beefier synchros

Not that I am aware of, The s542 has these weird little dogs and springs that fit into the synchro-slider apparatus and the s547 has a more integrated design (better) and is less prone to flying across your shop at a high rate of speed upon teardown, as well as causing less swear words on reassembly. Reason I would advise that this will not work is because this system is actually part of gears and shafts, so I think the swap would be a total shaft replacement. The s542 is a fine transmission don't worry about these. The synchros are prone to failure, but they are plenty durable as well as cheap and keep good oil in there and that should help more than anything. Good luck.
