The time has come for a new trans or atleast a rebuild in the 7.3. There is clutch pieces in the filter and i think the pan is cracked as its leakin good amounts of fluid.
So question one being do I rebuild what needs to be rebuilt and use the rest of the good components or rebuild the whole thing?
Question two being do I go with dudes rebuild but use a ATS triple-lok TC?
Question three being do i buy an aftermakret trans?
And question three being who do i go with if I buy an aftermarket trans? Ats? Bts? Suncoast?......
I agree with the last line of what aklim said. Once you have a BTS trans in your truck, you basically won't ever have to worry about it, or spending money on it, ever again. Initial cost is higher than a cheap rebuild, but how many times do you want to do a cheap rebuild?
My opinion is i heard ATS transmissions are not the best. Ive heard the BTS transmissions last..Nuff said. If you are rebuilding yourself replace all wear parts, and steel plates. The front pump and TC. Transgo shift kit, new trans cooler....This list goes on.
Seeing as you're located here in the West, I would give "John Wood" transmissions a call. His warranty, and custom rebuilds are very, very good.
Like BTS, you break it, he repairs it, no questions.
He also has a new rebuild, with a 6.4 converter that is perfect for a truck with 350-375 hp. Same warranty, same parts (with the exception of the converter) the price is about $1000 less at $2900. If you want it done in one day, bring the truck to him and add a labor cost of $400.00

What are the drawbacks of the 6.4 converter besides it is a stock unit? Sounds too good to be true. All the benefits but none of the cost?
Well Im gonna go with the "BTS Cheer Leaders" advice and give brian a call and see what he has to say. The trans I had was a great rebuild. It was good for 375hp but once i started tappin into the 1000lb ft marks it wasnt lasting. I'll be sure to post up my info. Thanks guys!
After taking out my chip for DP-Tuner to reprogram, I noticed that my trans temps were about 50 above ambient empty. Usually I run about 65 deg above ambient empty. The problem with the DP-Tuner chip is that it seems to heat my trans up by about 15 degrees. I can't figure out why. The wife has some half assed theory that it is because I keep romping on the skinny pedal while the 80HP Econo tune or the 60HP Tow is on and it heats up the trans more trying to make a black cloud at every stop sign but that can not be it, can it? Who else can I blame? Strange that when you don't stamp on the pedal every chance you get the trans stays cooler, huh? She does warn me that I'll break the trans since that is what happens most of the time in my Firebird but I keep telling her that the BTS is begging to be broke and I am trying my best to oblige.
haha, i feel ya. When I threw the nos on the truck it really punished the trans on the dyno. The guy who rebuilt it did a good job the first time so its either gonna be a performance trans or another rebuild from him with a BTS valve body and an ATS pan. I'll know by tomorrow.

I wouldn't bother with the pan. IMO, that is a solution I would use if I head an early 99 that didn't have the plumbing thru the radiator and a cooler. Currently, romping on it every chance I get, the temp is about 65 above ambient and no more than 80 above ambient when towing my toy hauler that weighs 8500#. It is better than nothing but so far, I haven't found a need for the deep pan other than to stretch my wallet come fluid change time.
Keep the pan, adds ridgidity to the case, cooling fins in the airflow under the truck, more capacity-fluid stays cleaner longer...
I would talk to JW..He will build you want you want, although the 6.4 TC is awesome..He will work with you on want you want, Doesn't build just one level trans..
