1994 7.3 IDI TURBO UPGRADE

it can be done, but it takes some fab to do it. you cant use the factory up pipes off a powerstroke either.
you already have what is generally considered to be the best all around turbo for the idi's. without mods, you wont spool much of anything else either.
if youre modless, turn the fuel up and add some head studs. then you'll be utilizing the factory turbos potential and would be better off than just swapping to a bigger one.

I didn't mean to imply that the sidewinder wasn't a good option, because it is also considered, by many who are familiar with all, to be just as good or better than the ATS. there are some that like the banks, and some that like the ATS.
however, that banks test is a bunch of garbage. theyre comparing a truck with their turbo and the fuel turned up vs a factory turbo and the fuel untouched.
the ATS with a banks down pipe, a decent y pipe, wastegate adjusted, and the fuel turned up will do the same thing or close to it.
good writeup by the way.

if your truck is in good shape and you know your going to have it for years to come still, both hypermax and banks still offer new turbo kits.
just remember though, there's no point in turbocharging a de-tuned idi to start with.invest in a fresh ip,new injectors and have the timing set to 8BTDC before doing too much.the sad part is,tuning up an idi will cost about the same as turbocharging one using a used kit.

idi's are an expensive cheap diesel.
