2007 fuel gauge problem

From time to time my 07 psd while driving or while it's idling the fuel gauge will drop to empty also my dte will show2 dashes then after alil while the gauge will go back to the normal reading. it will also jump to full when it's not does anyone know what could be wrong? I was thinking maybe the sender is gummed up with crap in the tank?

When mine started to act funny I removed it and found some sort of corrosion on the grounding portion of the sending unit. I also disassembled it and thoroughly cleaned everything and tweaked it so the part the goes up and down on the resistor made better contact. It was an hour or so if work to pull and clean it. Has worked well ever since about 8 Months now. For the price they get for a new sending unit I would recommend pulling and cleaning it up. It was well worth it in my case and the sender is a very simple device.

I'll look for the photos. But you most likely had some rust
on the wiper and or the resistor board of the sender in the tank.
I took mine apart and cleaned with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol.
Be VERY gentle with the wiper. Bend it too much and SNAP! $300 or
more for a new assembly.

I'll edit this and put the link where I put the photos and what I did.
I also replaced the top tank seal. Mine was leaking some. So two
birds one stone.

Sean

EDIT : For some reason I can't get any search results older than 6-2014. It will take some time and recreate the post with the photos.

Just what I did. AND I only removed the driver side bolts and
loosened the passenger side ones. Make sure that you check the
wiring in the back. Some of mine were a bit on the tight side
with the bed up. Also I used my engine cheery picker to lift from
the one side.

Fuel level sender

Fuel Level Sensor Board

This sender is from an older Ranger. They are more or less the same
just the plastic color is different and the float arm is shorter.
The plastic tank nut goes on @ 60 Ft/Lb.
I put the PDF in with this.

Make sure to clean around the tank opening before you try to
remove the ring. You don't want any of that nasty dirt in the tank.

My only cautionary is do not use a powerfull impact to remove the bolts. Ford recomends a hand ratchet
The nut is a spring nut clips on the rail something like a IR double hammer 900 FTlb will rip it right off the frame.
