94 F150 interior mirror woes solved
My inside mirror fell off the windshield after being parked in the sun for a long while. The "button" and mirror both left the windshield. I had been wanting to replace this mirror because, although it worked fine, the center third was cloudy (kind of like my cataract, but that's another story).
My initial idea was to cruise the local auto parts recyclers for either an exact replacement or a nice mirror off another model. I didn't want an aftermarket new mirror. I soon found:
1) nobody had a '94 F150
2) the usable mirrors were still attached to unbroken windshields.
3) the broken windshields were all missing their mirrors.
On a whim I took a pass at ebay and found a mirror for sale by a seller called burkhartautomotiveinc. There was a photo of the exact mirror for sale and documentation that it came off another '94 pickup. I queried the seller to see if the mirror came with its appropriate button and whether it had any flaws in the mirror. He answered right back and I did a Buy It Now for $25. It came in about two days and it was in great shape. It was not an exact match for the old mirror and had a different button and was about an inch narrower. The day/night adjustment worked fine and both of the balljoint adjustments on the mirror and mounting arm were free and worked smoothly. I am now of the opinion that the mirror that fell off was not the one that came with the pickup when new.
I decided to follow the advice of several posters on this subject and mounted the mirror about two inches higher than the old one. This was an improvement. I am 5'10" and this change improved visibility. If you do this get a helper to manipulate the sunvisors to make sure they won't obstruct/contact the mirror in its new place.
I prepped the glass thoroughly following the package directions and mounted the button using Permatex Extreme Rearview Mirror Professional Strength Adhesive. I let the button cure for 24 hours and then mounted the mirror. So far, so good.
The following morning the mirror, button and all, was back down on the floor.
The second time I used 3M Auto Advanced Rear View Mirror Adhesive, which was actually cheaper than the Permatex product. I prepped as before and the mirror is still there and hanging on as tight as a politician with a new tax bill. FWIW, burkhartautomotiveinc on ebay is a good place to do business and the 3M adhesive is the way to go. 3M has a warranty and Permatex seems to be guarantee free, Good Luck!
