I was able to remove the door panel for installation of a new drivers mirror on my 2001 F150...very easy...thanks to the input from this site!
However, I was, shall we say, feeling "economic" and purchased an after market mirror for 1/2 the price of the Ford part. Well, ya get what ya pay for. The bolts that hold the mirror were 1/4 the weight of the Fords, the darn mirror itself shook all the way down the road, thus making the view just about worthless and the chrome cover was "pray no rocks hit it or it's gone" thinness.
I was lucky, able to return the aftermarket mirror and tonight on my way to the Ford dealer for a real mirror.
Thanks again for input.
Janet
The after market mirror was $110. The Ford mirror cost me $205.
I felt the $95 difference was worth having a good mirror, especially since the visual field was distorted by the mirror in the housing vibrating and moving in the after market mirror. I am also sure I would need to replace the after market mirror some day down the road due to it's poor quality.

I just installed a set of after market mirrors my '03 F150. So far so good, no complaints. Ford wanted $205 per mirror, way to much for a mirror. I got both for $160 shipped to the house. Match up perfectly. No vibrations. I guess I got lucky and got a good set.
