found a broken rubber line... what is it?

2006 f250 4X4 6.0
Was under the truck today and noticed a rubber hose line cut (broke) in 2. It runs from the top of the front diff to the top of the tranny somewhere. It's brittle and broke. I have no clue what this is or where it goes. I tried to follow it up and over the tranny and think I felt a hose clamp on top. Does anybody know what this is or even does? I just purchased the truck a week ago... Thank you for any help. Much appreciated!

Not the front diff.. The diff that's hooked to the back of tranny for 4 wheel drive. Sorry.. first 4 wheel drive.. not sure of part names.

What you describe sounds like the vent hose for the front diff. Routed high to keep moisture out .....

It may tie into the tranny case vent and route up close to the bellhousing . It should be secured at a high point to prevent water intrusion .

Ok.. very cool, thank you. So I might want to do a fluid change at that case and install a new line and keep it high.
