Front wheel hub bearing stud

Hi guys,

New problem. I discovered that I was missing a stud nut from behind the front wheel hub. It only has 3 of 4 stud nuts. So I went to ford dealership and they gave me the wrong nut. I thought it was a new part so I proceeded to tighten. It went in halfway and wouldn't go in all the way. It would seem that in the process of tightening, the stud got pushed thru about 8mm, and now it may be impeding the entire wheel from spinning freely.

My question is if there is any way for me to rescue this situation? I got the wrong nut out and I will be picking up the correct nut tomorrow morning. When I install the correct nut for the stud, will it pull that stud out or am I doomed?

Thanks in advance,

Dom

Dom,
I should be able to remove the studs from the unit bearing that you sent to me.
After I remove them and check for a good one. I'll get it in the mail to you.
PM me you address again so I send to the right place.

Lets hope that all you did was cut threads into the old stud.

Sean

Thanks for the reply Sean. If I install the correct stud nut, and tighten, is there a distinct possibility that it may pull that stud out so its not impeding the movement of the wheel?

I'm not sure what year you have but on my 05' that's not possible. I just rebuilt my entire front end and the studs go in and get torqued down to spec before installing the hub. If you ran it thru is that stud in backwards so the side with the short threads facing in?

mine is an 05 as well, and i'm trying to install the nut on the wheel bearing side, which is the side closest to the tie rod. from what i read, the studs just screw on, and the hub gets installed, and the 4 studs get torqued down when the nuts are installed. correct me if i'm wrong please.

that is correct, the 4 studs just screw in, the nut near the tie rod ends get torqued, something like 137lbs. As long as the majority of the stud is in the hole with sufficient threads holding, tightening the nut won't cause the stud to go deeper into the housing or a least not very much before you reach the torque spec.

I screwed the studs in finger tight on the last one I did two weeks ago.

I will have to recheck but mine came with instructions to tighten them before installing the hub. Wither way there where like any stud a blank spot in the threads where one side is short and the other long I would try to remove it and make sure it is oriented the proper way. I tightened mine in the bearing before installing and never had an rub issues. They only go to the stop point. My guess someone got it in there backwards.

thanks for the responses guys. yup, i ordered a new complete hub and installed it. i guess somebody was trying to mess with my truck. so far so good. it's driving much better than before, but then there was never an issue on driving. it's just old part, and i'm updating it. and with that stud pushed all the way in, i couldn't drive the truck anyway without damaging the old hub. oh well, i'm not complaining about a new part. had to happen sometime.
