should my transmission crossmember be bolted above the lower frame rail rather than below? Just doesn't seem right to me bolted the way it is now. "What if the bolts break" is what hits me concerned.

There is not a lot of weight on that crossmember so it's not likely to break. It is bolted from below so that it can be removed when you need to R&R the trans.

Anyone know what this threaded hole is for? It's on the rear passenger side of the block right next to transmission . 87 302 HO. Thanks

I got these transmission fittings for my AOD the are 1/4”NPSM but will not thread in the hole . Seems like they are to big. Looked all over and cannot find anything.Thanks !

On factory setups the crossmember is above the lower flange. You remove the bolts, jack up trans and angle the crossmember and drop down. No weight on bolts in fact if bolts fell out still stays up. I would try it that way myself....
